Karibas Southern Gentleman (Rhett) Where do I begin with Rhett's story? After I graduated Cal Poly's MBA program, I moved to a 2 1/2 acre place in Arroyo Grande in June 2003. A few months back I had lost my precious black lab, Hallie, who was only 9 months at the time because of someone's carelessness with leaving a gate open to a busy road. It took a while to recover from that and when I moved to this great new spot I decided that I would get a Ridgeback, since I had always wanted one when I was on enough property. I did a lot of searching on the web and found a breeder in Nipomo; however, they had just placed their last puppy. They referred me to Jennifer Childs in Cayucos and I immediately called her. At that point I was more interested in a pet-quality dog and she had two litters on the ground, a total of about 22 pups to choose from! When I arrived, I was completely overwhelmed by the cutest creatures I have ever seen. I spent a couple hours out there and ended up falling head over heels for Rhett. I also liked one of the show females but Jennifer told me she wasn't sure which one was already spoken for and she would know in a week. Well, that week went by so slowly and I drove back out there not knowing which pup I would end up with. As soon as I arrived, Jennifer's daughter had Rhett in her arms and said "Here's your boy". But, I promised them that I would get into showing since he was such a nice pick. They introduced me to Michele and Chris Bohrer, Ridgeback breeders and handlers, who actually co-own Rhett's father. That began a great friendship and Michele began showing Rhett at 6 months of age. He did outstanding as a pup and even won a Best Puppy in Group at only about 8 months old. Because my life is busy with the horses as well, it was hard for me to get to a lot of shows so it took Rhett a little longer to finish. He finally did it in Santa Cruz with a 4 point major in August 2005, and Terri Brennan showed him for that win. Rhett is a lovebug who craves running with my horses. He can be a couch potato or a hunting fool. He has movement that you don't see every day and his face is just as perfect as they come. |
