| All puppies currently have homes. I will hopefully be breeding Scarlett and Rhett within the year, so if you would like to get on the list now, please send me an email. |

| Well the big day finally came on May 16th, 2007. What a long couple of days! Scarlett started getting very restless two nights ago and I thought she was going to have her pups Tuesday night so I was up most of the night. Then she was having contractions yesterday morning and I had my eye on her very closely and was trying to make her stay in her whelping box. Well, finally I thought she may just want to get to her bed in my room and I let her go in there while I was in my office. Then I heard some licking and ran in there and she had a puppy in her mouth! I grabbed the pup and ran downstairs and had to get a lot of fluid out of the mouth and nose as it wasn’t breathing yet. Finally I got her breathing and dried off and realized she was a beautiful girl with a nice ridge, weighing a healthy 500 grams. She wears the orange collar. Then about 40 minutes later, Light Green entered the world backwards but turned out thriving with a great ridge as well! She was a very healthy 520 grams. This is where things went nuts. Scarlett was having some contractions but producing nothing. After three hours I called Clayton and asked his advice (that would be probably my 5th call to him within the past couple hours!) and he recommended I call my emergency vet. So of course they wanted me to bring Scarlett and the pups in. I loaded mom and babies up in the truck and got to the vet and she palpated Scarlett and said there wasn’t a pup stuck so to be safe she took some xrays to make sure one wasn’t blocking another one, etc. The xrays were fine and it showed the last 4 all coming out backwards! So she did give her a little Oxytocin to help contractions along and sent us home. Then I just waited patiently and FINALLY at 11:20 (6 hours after the last pup) she started to push heavily. But then I saw a tail and no sac and knew this pup was out of the placenta and suffocating in the birth canal. This being my first litter, I have read almost every article out there on whelping puppies so I didn’t waste any time. The pup was not coming at all, so I put some lube in a syringe and injected it past the puppy to help it come out. Then with a towel I pulled on that puppy with Scarlett’s help and finally Red came out, but she was as lifeless as can be and I for certain thought she had passed. Nevertheless, I used the swinging momentum trick to clear the pathways in her lungs and I must have done this 10 times…I was not giving up on her. I can’t tell you the feeling I had when I heard her cry! I actually lost it myself! Scarlett was very worried about her so I put her on Scarlett’s belly and she didn’t waste any time nursing! She has a slightly shorter ridge that starts lower on her back so she is likely pet quality. She came in at 520 grams. So at this point I’m thinking this is the last time I want to go through this drama! But then the rest of the pups were a breeze to deliver and Scarlett was just such a natural. About an hour after Red, out came Blue while I was actually in the other room for a minute. Scarlett had him all cleaned up and crying by the time I saw him. The first boy! And what a nice boy he is…great ridge, crowns, etc. Then only 15 minutes later another breech delivery but all was great and this little girl is in the dark green collar and another beautiful ridge! At this point Scarlett is wiped out, and I am just trying to keep my eyes open. An hour and a half later, my first normal positioned delivery of a darling (yes you guessed it, GIRL) with four white paws and white on her chest and belly. She came in at 540 and has a great ridge as well! I couldn't tell if she has 2 crowns though...She is the one in the pics without a collar…I was too tired at this point! So, I did manage to get maybe two hours of sleep right on the floor next to them, but every cry(and they are talkative like Mom!) had me grabbing for my flashlight to make sure everything was OK. Mom and kids are doing just awesome! Clayton is coming to see the litter this Saturday and help determine which could be shows and which could be pets, but obviously it will be quite a few weeks until we know certain characteristics. As for right now, it does look like 1 pet and possibly 5 shows but I will keep everyone updated! |
